Ecology

Good for nature.
Good for us all.

Environmental Vision 2050

Mahler 1 aligns with the City of Amsterdam’s 2050 vision of becoming a multi-centred city. The Zuidas is set to become one of those centers, with Mahler 1 as a key catalyst. Located right next to the new international station, it also connects Amsterdam to the rest of Europe.

Blue-green vision, 1934

Amsterdam is renowned for being one of the greenest cities in the world. This is a commitment rooted in the ideas laid down in 1934 by urban planner, Van Eesteren, who also designed the Vondelpark. Mahler 1 embraces this ‘in balance with nature’ vision, respecting Amsterdam’s history and integrating with established wildlife corridors, such as the Minervalaan.

A sanctuary for wildlife

Mahler 1’s tiered terraces, filled with 72 different species of native plants, will encourage cross-pollination and the easy movement of birds, insects and animals – just like in a forest canopy. Nesting areas, bat boxes and planting will all play their part in reintroducing many different vulnerable native species to the Zuidas, such as swifts and pipistrelle bats.

Wellbeing

Better spaces start with healthy people

Back to nature

At the heart of Mahler 1 lies a biophilic design philosophy – a reconnection with nature through architecture. Inside and out, there will be greenery, natural materials and sculptured organic forms to create spaces that are as beautiful as they are beneficial.

The building’s position and design will also reduce the effects of city winds, creating a more pleasant environment for everyone.

Science supports what we instinctively know: natural environments make people happier and healthier.

Cycling city

Mahler 1 embraces Amsterdam’s cycling culture with 573 bike parking spaces. Follow the colour-coded pathways to the basement, freshen up in the showers, use the lockers, and then come up in the lifts to the ground floor. There are also electric charging points for anyone who needs to recharge.

A new typology

Scalloped façade, natural light, clean air, open spaces, healthy food, panoramic views, access to nature, space for locals… It all adds up to a very special place where everyone will feel relaxed and at home.

So please come in and say hello. We can’t wait to meet you.

Quality

Built to inspire.
Built to last.

Sustainability

Not only is it beautiful to look at, Mahler 1 also works hard to help the environment. The vertical fins on its façade are elegant, and at the same time help to cool the building. And with 3,200 sqm of solar panels, we’re generating an incredible 370,000 kWh of electricity a year – enough to power 140 Dutch households.

Building with purpose

Mahler 1 uses low-carbon and natural materials, and embraces sustainability throughout. Its hybrid timber and steel frame, along with a façade crafted from recycled glass-reinforced concrete, ensures that nearly everything used can be repurposed in the future. This is a building designed to stand the test of time – and whatever the environment throws at it.

For a healthier world

Healthier buildings create healthier neighbourhoods. This is an ethos you’ll see in action in many ways:

  • Smart water system: A sophisticated water management system alleviates pressure on Amsterdam’s sewer system during heavy rainfall and stores rainwater for irrigation of the greenery.
  • Natural irrigation: The stored rainwater is used to water the plants and the building’s green roof. This water buffering system can process up to 175,000 litres of rainwater, enough to sustain the greenery year-round.
  • Efficient climate control: Heating and cooling are powered by thermal energy storage, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate and efficient energy use.
  • Sustainability goals: These combined efforts support the achievement of the ParisProof targets, with a maximum energy usage of 70 kWh/m² per year.

As Amsterdam faces the challenges of global warming, Mahler 1 will help to create a comfortable urban oasis, through the use of water storage, greenery and shade.
